This self-assessment is designed to help individuals in recovery evaluate their patterns of reactive communication and develop skills for more intentional responses. The assessment explores both reactive patterns that often persist beyond substance use and the development of mindful communication practices that support sustainable recovery. There are no right or wrong answers - the goal is to promote self-awareness and identify areas for growth.

The title of this workbook reflects a powerful metaphor for communication in recovery. Just as there is a natural space between inhaling and exhaling, there can be a purposeful space between stimulus and response in our interactions. This pause—however brief—creates room for choice rather than automatic reaction.

In this space between stimulus and response lies the opportunity for:

  • Identifying automatic thoughts before they become words

  • Recognizing physical activation before it drives impulsive speech

  • Aligning your communication with recovery values rather than emotional reactions

  • Choosing connection over being right or avoiding discomfort
