Twelve Step Deep Dives

One long-form workbook for each of the Twelve Steps

Each of these workbooks takes one step and goes deep. There are five or six readings, each followed by check-in questions and written exercises. They explain what the step asks, why people resist it, and how to put it into practice, in plain terms alongside the traditional language.

They're long, at 21 to 55 pages each, so plan on several sittings. Work them in order with a sponsor, or use one alongside the step you're on now. Your check-in results are shown in the app.

These are The Recovery Files' own workbooks. They are not produced or endorsed by Alcoholics Anonymous World Services.

These workbooks support professional treatment and are not a substitute for it. In a crisis, call or text 988, or call SAMHSA at 1-800-662-4357.

Inventory (Steps 4–5)

Looking honestly at what happened, then telling it to another person.

4

Step 4 · Breaking the Shame Spiral

Understanding shame and guilt in early recovery

Shame is often what makes the inventory feel impossible. This workbook separates shame from guilt, traces where the inner critic comes from, and shows how secrecy feeds relapse. It then builds self-compassion and resilience so the honest look becomes bearable.

Inside: 6 readings (shame vs. guilt · where shame comes from · the shame–addiction spiral · the secrecy trap · self-compassion · building shame resilience) · 3 check-ins · exercises, including a shame inventory and what you're still keeping secret

From secrecy to disclosure

The longest workbook in the set. It covers why telling another person changes things, why people put it off, how to choose your listener, going deeper than the list, and what to expect afterward.

Inside: 6 readings · 5 check-ins · 10 exercises, including a fears inventory, choosing your listener, the three admissions and a Step Five action plan with an after-care plan

Change and amends (Steps 6–9)

Becoming willing to change, then repairing what can be repaired.

Step 6 · Were Entirely Ready

From awareness to willingness

Why we hold on to defects that hurt us. It names the hidden payoffs, weighs them against the real costs, and faces the question of who you are without them.

Inside: 6 readings (what Step Six asks · where defects come from · the hidden payoffs · "entirely ready" · identity without defects · readiness as trust) · 5 check-ins · 10 exercises, including a payoff analysis and a real-cost ledger

Step 7 · The Void

Understanding the emptiness at the heart of addiction and how recovery fills it

The hollow, restless feeling that substances used to fill. It looks at where the emptiness comes from, what it has cost you, what it does to the brain's reward system, and what actually fills it in recovery.

Inside: 5 readings (what the void is · how it forms · what it has cost · the brain science · filling the void) · 5 check-ins · 10 exercises, including a loss inventory and "who am I without it?"
