Recovery Timelines
Twelve printable boards for seeing your recovery story in full.
Addiction distorts memory. It shrinks the consequences, edits the past, and insists it wasn't that bad. Timeline work is a structured way to look at the whole, honest picture: how use began, how it progressed, what it cost, and what you are building now.
Each board below is a printable fill-in workbook. Work through one on your own, with a sponsor, or alongside your counselor. Go at your own pace. This work is about truth and clarity, not shame.
These workbooks support professional treatment and are not a substitute for it. In a crisis, call or text 988, or call SAMHSA at 1-800-662-4357.
Mapping Boards
Trace how addiction developed and what keeps it going: your history, your thinking, your behavior, your relationships, and the patterns behind cravings and relapse.
Substance Use History Timeline
A guided walk through your life, stage by stage, showing how addiction began, how it progressed, and what it touched along the way. You move through eight life stages, from childhood to sixty and beyond, and look at each one across twelve life areas. Those areas include the substances you used, family and relationships, work or school, legal trouble, physical and mental health, money, housing, and every attempt to control or quit. The board ends with questions that help you step back and see the full pattern. Your history is not your destiny. It is your teacher.
Inside: 8 life stages · 12 life areas · guided questions for each stage · big-picture reflection · 31 pages

Cognitive Distortions Timeline
Trace the thinking patterns that kept addiction going across your life story. This board explains twelve cognitive distortions, including all-or-nothing thinking, catastrophizing, emotional reasoning, minimization and denial, and blaming. It shows how each one connects to using. You then map which distortions showed up in each phase of your life, from childhood through your recovery today. A deep-dive section walks you through your own cycle, from distorted thought to painful emotion to substance, so you can start catching and replacing those thoughts.
Inside: 12 distortions explained · 7 life phases · the thought-emotion-substance cycle · personal reflection · 23 pages

Character Defects & Addiction Timeline
Character defects and addiction grow side by side and feed each other. This board maps twelve of them, including selfishness, dishonesty, resentment, fear, pride, self-pity, people-pleasing, and jealousy. For each one you read how it develops, what it looks like in daily behavior, and how it damages partners, family, work, friendships, and spirit. Each defect also names the trait to build in its place, such as honesty for dishonesty or generosity for selfishness. You rate where each defect stands for you today and write how it still shows up in your recovery. This is a natural companion to Steps 4 through 7.
Inside: 12 character defects · impact on each area of life · the trait to build in its place · personal intensity rating · 55 pages

Relationships Strained by Addiction
Addiction leaves damage in every relationship it touches. This board helps you trace that damage honestly and begin to repair it across seven areas: romantic partners, family of origin, children and parenting, friendships, work, community, and your relationship with yourself. You look at common damage patterns such as secrecy, broken trust, financial harm, absence, and role reversal. You then follow your relationships through each stage of addiction and recovery and build a personal repair plan for each area, including amends and grieving what was lost.
Inside: 7 relationship areas · 8 damage patterns · relationship inventory · repair plan for each area · 31 pages

Relapse Pattern Timeline Mapping Board
Recovery isn't a straight line, and relapse rarely comes out of nowhere. It moves through emotional and mental stages before it becomes physical. This board helps you map your periods of sobriety and the life events around them. You rate your engagement across eight areas of recovery, such as meetings, step work, sponsor contact, honesty, and self-care, so you can see where you start to pull back. You then check off your own cognitive, emotional, and behavioral warning signs, name your personal relapse signature, and build a prevention action plan.
Inside: sobriety periods and life events · 8-area engagement map · warning signs inventory · your relapse signature · prevention action plan · 19 pages

Trigger Mapping Timeline Board
Triggers are the bridges between your recovery and your disease. This board teaches seven kinds of triggers: environmental, emotional, social, physical, psychological, time-based, and success triggers. Then it gives you a log for recording each episode. For every trigger you note what happened, the automatic thought, your emotions and body sensations, how strong the craving was, what you did, and how well it worked. Over time your entries show which kinds of triggers are most active for you and which responses actually help.
Inside: 7 trigger types · episode log · reflection questions for each type · 13 pages

Drunk / Drug Dream Journal & Timeline
Drunk and drug dreams are among the most common and most upsetting experiences in recovery. They can happen in early sobriety or decades in. They are not a sign of weakness or a warning that relapse is coming. This board explains why they happen and what they do and don't mean. It walks you through a six-step plan for the morning after: ground yourself, acknowledge the feelings, write the dream down, tell someone, process it, and recommit. Journal pages let you record each dream, how you felt on waking, and how strong any craving was afterward.
Inside: why these dreams happen · six-step morning-after plan · dream journal pages · 7 pages

Craving Timeline Mapping Board
Cravings are a normal, expected part of recovery, not a sign of failure. They are your brain's learned response to familiar cues, and each one carries information. This board helps you move from reacting to cravings to understanding them. Each log entry captures the time of day, your automatic thought, the feelings and situation around it, how strong the craving was and how long it lasted, what you did, and how well it worked. Patterns appear over time: your peak hours, your emotional triggers, and the coping strategies that work best for you.
Inside: craving episode log · intensity and response ratings · lessons learned · 4 pages

Vision Boards
Put the hardest parts of the story outside yourself, in words and images, so you can see them from a distance and build toward something new.
PAWS Timeline Mapping Board
Post-Acute Withdrawal Syndrome (PAWS) doesn't follow a straight line. It comes in waves, and those waves can last months after the acute phase is over. This board explains why PAWS happens, how long it tends to last for different substances, and the five areas it affects: thinking, emotions, sleep and energy, the body, and craving and risk. A 40-question assessment gives you a starting point. An episode log lets you record each wave as it comes. You finish by building a Wave Survival Kit before you need it and a Recovery Roadmap to steer by.
Inside: PAWS explained · 40-question assessment across 5 areas · episode log · pattern workbook · Wave Survival Kit · Recovery Roadmap · 43 pages

Bridging the Divide
A character-mapping intensive for men in recovery. Many men come into treatment carrying unwritten "Man Rules": never ask for help, handle it alone, don't show weakness. Those rules often started as ways to survive. In recovery they become walls. This workbook helps you cross from those rules to recovery principles: honesty, vulnerability, surrender, and connection. A 40-question assessment measures where you stand. Ten worksheets follow, including a Man Rules origins map, a character inventory, a support-network map, a daily check-in, and a letter of farewell to your old rules. It works well in men's groups and with a counselor.
Inside: 40-question assessment across 5 areas · 10 worksheets · Letter to Your Old Rules · 45 pages

Depression Timeline Vision Board
Depression isn't just sadness. It is a weight, a fog, a narrowing of the world. This board helps you put your depression story on a timeline in ten chapters, so you can see it from the outside. The chapters move from when the light first dimmed, through childhood and adolescence, loss and grief, depression in relationships, and the mask of functioning while drowning. They continue through the cycle of depression and substance use, life without the numbing, and finally where the light gets in. Each chapter has guided questions and space for an image that captures it. Go at your own pace and reach out for support if strong feelings come up.
Inside: 10 chapters · guided questions · space for images · 7 pages

Anxiety Timeline Vision Board
A visual journey through your anxiety story: past, present, and the peace you're building toward. Putting your experiences on a timeline creates distance, the space between you and your anxiety where healing happens. You move through nine stages: your earliest anxiety memory, childhood patterns, the teen years, relationships, work and performance, peak or crisis moments, the link between anxiety and substance use, anxiety in recovery, and your vision of peace. Each stage asks where you felt it in your body, how you coped, and what image captures it.
Inside: 9 stages · guided questions · body awareness prompts · space for images · 6 pages
